The credit union
was chartered in 1975 to serve the employees of Greenwood Mills,
Inc. in Greenwood, SC. We have a federal charter, which
means we are regulated and insured by the National Credit Union
Administration (NCUA), a U.S. Government agency. The credit
union was known as Greenwood Mills Credit Association. At
the time, there was a strong aversion to the word 'union'.
The charter was expanded through the years to include all wholly
owned subsidiaries of Greenwood Mills, Inc. We have served
members in Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and several South
Carolina cities.
In October
of 2000, with permission from NCUA, we changed our charter to
enable us to serve anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends
school in Greenwood County, SC. This change enabled us to
diversify our membership. Or, in other words, we thought it
best to not ' put all our eggs in one basket'. We believe
that a more diversified membership will help us weather the tough
times and enjoy the good times. We are operated by a
professional staff under the guidance of a volunteer Board of
Directors.
Credit Unions
differ in philosophy from other financial institutions. Our
philosophy, since our start, has been guided by the
principle of "people helping people". Other
financial institutions exist solely to make profits for their own
owners/stockholders. This doesn't mean that they are bad, it
does mean that you have a better alternative. |
